THE ABARA HOUSE PROJECT
AN EL PASO TREASURE WITH AN INTERNATIONAL SCOPE | AMPLIFYING THE STORIES AND HEART OF THE BORDERLANDS
What is it?
A multi-use Borderland Center, anchored at the historic Hacienda Restaurant sitting directly on the US-Mexico border, serving as a central hub for learning, reflection, and action.
History & Cultural Arts
Rotating history & art exhibits, contemplative gardens, narrative pathways, and historic markers that bridge conversations in a polarizing world.
Abara House at La Historic Hacienda
We envision this 4-acre oasis to include a café representing food & drinks from around the world, an event center & music venue, adobe desert chapel, offices, training space, a marketplace for local and global artisans, guest housing for those visiting the borderlands, and initiatives that heighten awareness of global neighbors experiencing displacement.

Take a journey through time at Abara House, an iconic piece of history rooted at the Historic Hacienda. As you take in the sights and sounds of this significant landmark, let’s listen together for stories both unheard and yet to be written.
ABARA HOUSE
Get a glimpse into the future as we honor history with these stunning 3D renderings of Abara House.
Our Project Director, Kim Schaefer, along with Karina Garcia, developed early stage design concepts which show the site bisected by a new entry drive into an active area on the right and a contemplative/restorative area on the left.
The active area is centered on the renovation of La Hacienda into the Abara Borderland Center and will include new construction.
A refreshed outdoor courtyard with second floor deck, and renovation of the apartments on the north side linked by new shaded courtyards.
The left side is designed as a place of contemplation and gathering featuring desert gardens, an ecumenical chapel, all connected by pathways celebrating historic markers, and the stories, peoples and cultures that have traversed this historic site for millennia.
